Welcome to Pretoria Gay Passport

Once the bastion of conservative Apartheid dogma, the City of Tshwane, geographically named as Pretoria, has bustled into a hive of LGBTI-friendly clubs, bars and venues.

Its cultural hub, the South African State Theatre, makes for an inviting first stop venue for the LGBTI person to settle into this thriving, biggest landmass metropolis in Africa. (and third largest in the world).

For a night out on the town the Menlyn Piazza with its bars and restaurants, including Cabana, would be a good LGBTI-friendly area to commence the start of painting this town purple – the city's signature colour due to its blossoming Jacaranda Trees in mid-Spring.

Babylon The Club is the gay venue of note. It primarily operates on Saturday evenings. Interestingly, on Friday evenings this same venue changes its name to Recess and transforms into a straight venue. Patrons of the two nights often coalesce which makes the venue truly polysexual.

For the more adventurous gay male, Camp David provides a true naked adventure. And while the township life is not as thriving as the neighbouring City of Johannesburg's Soweto can offer, it can be experienced at gay-friendly venues such as Rhapsody's Sunnyside and a select few places in the inner city. But it's best to get advice from a local before indulging in kasi (township) life.
